Ian did not fancy this arena in the slightest, he felt like a rocking horse as he cantered throwing his front end up and thrusting his hind ends ahead tossing his head.
The stallion huffed and snorted, kicking him into the proper lead with a dramatic jump up and a buck before I kicked him forward to the first jump.
Ian made sure to make a huge scene as I carried on with the course, I concluded that we weren't going to get the ideal time.
That round was a true test on how strong my seat was...

Siren had always been a smart, sensible horse that tended to blend into the dramatic group of other bays at the yard. He wasn't one for bad manners or awful habits; he didn't scare off grooms or riders for his own amusement - he was quite the perfect, laidback gentleman but often went unnoticed - especially compared to his half brother Jabari. Now a seasoned competitor and far too gentlemanly to do something horrific like act up or refuse a fence; he'd been taken over by Rupert when he took over the yard and under his sharp skill, Siren had flourished into a decent looking competitor. Although his ears often remained flat back on the pictures Rupert bought from the show's photographer, he was dearly fond of the plucky gelding and Siren was slowly getting the attention he'd always deserved.

As far as Callixta was concerned, their retirement was going fabulously well. Hours spent huddled up in the cluttered library room in the new house, acres of hilly land to walk the many dogs she'd insisted on adopting over the years; even the luxury of just pottering around in the arena on Jabari, only to end up face-down in the soggy sand when he got too bored. Her Dutch Warmblood had always had a stubborn, almost malicious streak buried deep inside and was known as Satan at the yard. Calli was defensively loyal to him though; retiring him at the top of their game had been the right decision before he managed to kill the pair of them. She'd spent summer with her head into the clouds until -
"What do you mean, he's crying?" Rupert pinched the bridge of his nose, stealing himself for his young sister's wonderfully creative speech he knew was coming.
"He's sad, Rupert!" Callixta threw a pair of mud-splattered boots into the box and squared up to him. "I know I said we were done and I mean it...but..."
"But you want to compete."
"No...he does."
"He's a horse, Calli."
"And he's crying with boredom!"
She won - she'd known she would do. Jabari's excitement that weekend had been infectious and the foul tempered monster inside him didn't peak out at all, not even halfway round the course when they reached the line of open trucked cars full of flowers. She'd spent all morning fretting he'd stop at that fence to take a snack out of the flowers - nobody would even be surprised if he did that. Jabari had an alarming reputation - but for once, he carted them safely and un-spectacularly home in good time.

10 am Introductory Level No pressure for ribbons for this young boy. We showed the easiest test, way below his level, just to give him a little more show experience and confidence in strange arenas. Being used to the peace in our countryside, Jalo got spooked by some the city voices, showing a natural talent in piaffe when hearing the ship horns, and extremely fast leg yield when seeing -sigh- a car. We scored only 51,2 points, but I don't really care, his funny movements just confirmed me we have a very promising stallion here.

11 am Medium level What a perfect way to start the day! As the Finnhorse dressage classes were the first ones in the morning, there were only handful of people watching, giving Anna and Lungo the peace to concentrate only on their test. Lungo felt so agile, so deeply concentrated, listening to the smallest of aids, making Anna all smiles towards the end of their turn.

The jumps seemed huge and the chestnut mare (how convenient) was in a bad mood. Erik was already exhausted by the heat, and Saffron was spooking the audience all along the cross country course and the drones flying above them. ”It's alright girl” he hissed, trying to hide his annoyment, ”let's try and get this out of the way”.

Dottie had felt the nerves churning her stomach all day; although she'd ridden a few times in this level of competitions it had always been with the lazy black mare Plaza, who was still safely snuggled in her stable at the yard, she didn't have much experience riding the yard's top dressage stallion Vinny. He'd been semi retired not long ago but hadn't taken to retirement at all; Alma and Callixta both insisted he was a horse who needed to keep busy and his mind needed puzzles and exercises to work through so Dottie had been given the ride on him at a few shows to keep him 'ticking over' as the ladies said.

It had been about six months since the yard had managed to regain ownership of Velkommen; he'd been sold extremely young and unproven, sold to gain limited finances as the yard struggled through a ferocious winter and a heap of outstanding bills. He'd returned home toweringly tall and magnificent in his presence, but never a problem horse. He had manners and respect, but liked to remain independent. Merope had taken him on over the spring, settling into a steady rhythm of hacking around the local village before going into the arena for actual training - but the hardest part had been not to pester him with cuddles and ear-scratches. He liked his alone time and wasn't fond of visitors in his stable at all but for all his aloofness, he never once faltered to perform at shows.
