A T A G L A N C E . ________________________________
Say Agatha Foskett aloud at a show ground and prepare to listen to story after story about her volcanic temper, icy exterior, or the time a certain famous hunter/jumper trainer said she "makes the Nazis look like boy scouts"- and when she told him she didn't care what he thought.
Sour, talentless, bad-tempered, bitch... Agatha has heard it all before. Labels and lies don't bother her anymore- hell; she embraces them. If folks want to give her a wide berth?
GOOD.
Life is so much easier when there aren't any people in it.
_______ A D O Z E N E S S E N T I A L F A C T S . _______ I. The only child of business tycoon Victor Foskett and screen starlet Clara Larocque, Agatha was born into a life of money, power and prominence... and the problems such things attract. To protect herself from the vultures circling within and around the Fosketts' world, she learned to be suspicious of people and their motives from an early age, cultivating, in the process, a habit of distrust. As a result, Agatha lives in a near-constant state of shields up, a wary child now a bitter and cynical adult.
- - - - - - - - -
| II. Agatha won't tolerate laziness, incompetence, or people who aren't on time. She can't stand injustices, however big or small, or tiny imperfections in (otherwise flawless) things, and is irrationally irritated when people ask her to repeat herself more than once. She hates clocks that run too fast or slow, text speak, slang, itchy sweaters, celebrity gossip shows, eighties power ballads, cheerleaders, the Happy Birthday song, losing arguments, being hit on, all major holidays, delayed trains, white chocolate, movies that aren't faithful to their books... and when people tell her she's "touchy," or needs to "lighten up."
- - - - - - - - -
| III. Home-schooled until thirteen, childhood was sheltered and lonely. There were no friends or siblings in young Agatha's world: time was passed in the company of books or figurines or stiff, austere tutors, or in one of her exotic pretend worlds, playing adventuress. While she waited for Victor to come home from work she too would be hard "at work," searching out ancient artifacts of untold origin and value; scouring the empty halls, questing through the silent gardens, seeking clues in the great, still rooms. These games of pretend were abandoned as she grew older, but feelings of discontent, of restlessness, have always been with her in some form or another.
- - - - - - - - -
| IV. Agatha likes dry humour, lambent light, crisp autumn days, and the sight of a lake so still it mirrors the sky. She takes great pleasure in a good wool coat, in orderliness, and in being right; loves the feeling of letting her hair loose after having it tied back all day, and derives great satisfaction from seeing drivers who speed past her being pulled over by the police.
- - - - - - - - -
| V. Most of Agatha's contemporaries roll their eyes skyward and attribute the existence of her show jumping career to the Foskett name and fortune. What they don't know was that she wasn't simply given sponsorship: she had to earn it, like everybody else. But that doesn't matter, does it? Hard work, perseverance, and personal sacrifices don't count when you're born with a silver spoon in your mouth.
- - - - - - - -
| VI. Agatha’s favourite smells are oiled leather, loose Earl Grey tea, the earthiness of fallen autumn leaves, and old books. She collects antique or beautifully bound editions of her favourite novels, and secretly loves the slightly scrunchy sound the aging paper makes when turned from page to page.
- - - - - - - - -
| VII. When she’s sad she likes to simply be sad rather than trying to cheer herself up. Usually, this involves being at home alone, turning off the lights and opening wide the curtains, lying in the starlit dark whilst listening to gloomy Billie Holiday songs and indulging in introspection. And a little bit of red wine. Because... because.
- - - - - - - - -
| VIII. As a child she suffered with terrible insomnia and to ease her into sleep her father would sit her on his lap and read to her in his library, often in the dead of night. She’d fall asleep with her head on his chest, nestled in the warmth of his woolen suits, listening to him read his favourite works. To this day, she finds an immense calm in libraries, has a penchant for forgettable poetry, and is strangely- embarrassingly- soothed by the feeling of being held in a man's arms.
- - - - - - - - -
| IX. Agatha doesn’t have many friends. If you told her as much, she’d reply with quality over quantity, and she’d have a valid point. Agatha met Caleb Quain at a horse show when she was nine years old and Eva Anders in a boarding school dormitory room when she was fourteen. From thereon, she never cared that her peers didn’t like her, because as far as she was concerned, the best of them did. It might be difficult for her to say as much openly, but Agatha can count the people she loves on one hand... and Eva and Caleb each take up a finger.
- - - - - - - - -
| X. She can't roll her tongue and doesn't dream. You'll never catch her snacking on confectionery and she'll rarely order dessert- Agatha has no sweet tooth- but should she fancy something sweet she tends toward intensely dark chocolate, or simple French vanilla. Someone once described her as "devastatingly good" at Scrabble, which is not a gross exaggeration, but she can also be a devastatingly sore loser when it comes to board games.
Oh, and she never sleeps in, ever... though secretly, she'd like to try it someday.
- - - - - - - - -
| XI. Her mother left her and her father when she was five and left left the world soon after. Agatha still isn't sure she understands what she saw. She isn't sure she wants to. The only certain truths of the matter are that she's gone, and that she and Victor don't talk about it.
- - - - - - - - -
| XII. Sometimes, Agatha smiles. Not often, but people have said she's prettier when she does, and her laugh- a rarity!- is rich and warm; one of those pure and joyous laughs which calls for your smile in return.

A T A G L A N C E . ________________________________
Kind eyed, goodhearted and ever-optimistic, one wonders if Archie is oblivious to the world and the terrible deeds of the people within; if he's immune to the pain and pressure of modern existence.
... He isn't, of course, but being glum never helped anybody, did it? The best way to deal with problems is to put them behind you, smile- throw in the occasional dry remark- and be grateful for what you've learned. To that end, Archie's put his personal hopes and failed aspirations out of mind- career and love life included- and set his focus to raising his daughter, Jane, as best he possibly can.
_______ A D O Z E N E S S E N T I A L F A C T S . _______ I. The fourth of Lord and Lady Rothersay's six children, Archie was born and raised in Kensington, London, where he had the upbringing one would expect of a child born to such parents in such a part of the world; holidays, however, were passed at the family estate in Derbyshire, and there is where his fondest memories of childhood lay. Games of tennis, and cricket, and hide and seek in the woods; throwing mud at his sisters, playing in the lake waters, and eating strawberries from the garden, warm from the sun. The times the Rothersay-Vandover family spent together at the estate brought them ever closer, even as the children grew up, and Archie remains close to his parents and siblings to this day.
- - - - - - - - -
| II. After completing his A-levels, Archie snubbed a place at Cambridge and took off backpacking with two of his best mates, spending four months travelling about the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. Cairo, Jerusalem, Cyprus, Rhodes, Athens; he's something of a nut when it comes to ancient history and antiquities- fascinated with the subject- and has often said that had he not become an equestrian, he'd have pursued archaeology- to which most people roll their eyes and tell him such a job would be dreadfully dull.
- - - - - - - - -
| III. Aside from his native English, Archie has a "basic grasp" of French and German. French was learned throughout his schooling and put into practice in his late teens, when he and his mates would spend the occasional half-term in Honfleur; German came from his time living and working out of Zurich, for Stall Mügler, and the frequent commutes into Germany for competition. As an aside, the four years he spent there were among the best in his life, and Archie has a great fondness for Switzerland.
- - - - - - - - -
| IV. Archie likes open fireplaces, the feeling of crisp, clean cricket whites, and sliding across his floorboards in thick woollen socks, even though he knows he'll probably fall over one day. Among his favourite scents are those of soggy fields and oil paintings, because they remind him of home, as well as those of caraway, fresh, full-cream milk, horses, and cedar. He loves the taste of rhubarb dipped in sugar almost as much as the satisfying crunch that comes with biting it, goes weak at the knees for the sound of a quality piano, and needs a cup of tea twice a day, at the least. Earl Grey with milk and two lumps, for the record, and preferably with a shortbread cream or a scone (an English scone, FYI, with homemade jam and whipped cream, and don't try to give him any of that twaddle about the monstrosities the Americans call "scones")
- - - - - - - - -
| V. He's a hopeless romantic. A door-holding, slow-dancing, flower-bringing believer in lifelong love who reads romantic poetry for pleasure and can’t watch sappy films without a box of tissues handy. He’s also quite unashamed of it. Friends and family (and colleagues and strangers) have laughed at him, rolled their eyes, told him he’s naive or that his ideals are antiquated and unrealistic; Archie laughs right back. In his opinion, there’s nothing wrong with being an old-fashioned romantic- to the contrary: life might even be better that way.
- - - - - - - -
| VI. Indian cuisine is one of his passions. A deceptively good cook, he gets a great thrill from experimenting with new recipes, thumbing through cookbooks, and shopping for ingredients (is the kind of person who gets excited about the colour of saffron or the smell of fresh tomatoes) There’s always a leftover curry in Archie's fridge and turmeric stains on the counters (something which irritated his ex-wife immeasurably.) Archie would love to visit India someday.
- - - - - - - - -
| VII. He loves puzzles and brainteasers- particularly those impossible 'cryptic' crosswords- and is one of those annoying people who'll pass by your shoulder, instantly solve the clue you're struggling with, and ruin it for you without a second thought. Other hidden talents include the playing the piano- he's moderately good at it, but would never say so- and ballroom dancing, a skill he acquired through a mandatory semester in college. Teenage Archie was on the fence about it at the time, but now he's a little bit smug about being able to lead a woman around the dance floor with confidence and grace.
- - - - - - - - -
| VIII. Archie is a prolific reader, with a particular interest in old school sci-fi, non-fiction historical, poetry, and good British whodunnits. His bookshelves include everything from Austen to Orwell, Wilde to Wells, Keats to Le Carre, Fleming to Wodehouse. As for poetry, it’s not uncommon to hear him rattling off lines to his horses as he tends to them- just as it’s not uncommon to hear someone teasing him about it.
- - - - - - - - -
| IX. He has a penchant for classic rock and soul, from the ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s- the kind of music they play on the oldies station; the kind his daughter is going to roll her eyes at when she's a teenager. The playing of this music is almost always accompanied by dancing of questionable skill, but always with notable enthusiasm, and a distinct lack of shame.
- - - - - - - - -
| X. Archie has mild claustrophobia, an affliction declared to have sprung from the time he got stuck in a laundry chute whilst playing with his siblings. It was a good hour before they decided they'd get in more trouble for leaving him there than for being discovered... after which time, the poor darling was suffering immeasurably. He had bruises and aches for weeks after, poor lamb.
- - - - - - - - -
| XI. Recently divorced, Archie lives in suburban Pemberton in his 'fixer-upper with potential' with a cat called Bertram, and his daughter every second week. On the weeks he's alone, he puts more time into working on the house and garden. He likes to keep busy. Because if he's busy, he doesn't feel quite so lonely.
- - - - - - - - -
| XII. [snipped, because I changed my mind]

A T A G L A N C E . ________________________________
Laid-back, down to earth, charmingly irreverent and smooth as hell; there's an easygoing allure about Caleb Quain, one which has long made him seem out of place in the polished, ultra-competitive world that is elite equestrian-
- and the fans absolutely love it.
Throw in a gritty backstory, puckish personality and a certain natural charisma; some would say Quain hasn't had to work as hard as circuit gossip says to have those sponsors banging on his door. Regardless of how he got there, one fact remains incontestable: no one ever suited the limelight so much as Caleb did.
_______ A D O Z E N E S S E N T I A L F A C T S . _______ I. Caleb’s parents had him young and unexpectedly. Aurelia first met Charlie at a Fourth of July party on the SCU campus. Things happened rather quickly after that. She told him about the baby on New Year’s Eve; they eloped in February; Caleb was born the following July. Aurelia left her studies in order to care full time for their newborn son, while Charlie swapped his law textbooks for a mechanic’s tools. The young Quain family may not have had a lot, but they made do, and by most accounts, they were happy.
- - - - - - - - -
| II. He loves rock and blues music and has five guitars hanging in his apartment, each painted with vivid patterns, colours, or surreal scenes, and with some whimsical story of origin. He can’t play, but will pull them down every now and then after a long day and pluck at them idly. It’s one of the few things that slows his ever racing mind and helps him to relax.
- - - - - - - - -
| III. Blessed with an above-average IQ, Caleb was frequently reminded he “could be anything” by teachers and family alike. It was this same bright mind that enabled Caleb to figure out he could get away with doing the bare minimum when it came to classes. Why bother studying for an A when you only needed a C to pass?? He could be an engineer or a doctor or a lawyer, like his dad wanted, but it wasn’t what he wanted. He didn’t want to spend his life in an office. He still doesn't, and doesn't regret his decision.
- - - - - - - - -
| IV. On an ideal day off, Cal would wake to a view of the darkened horizon and the sound of a restless sea. On the journey from bed to board he'd hop into some board shorts, snatch a towel and follow the trail of dappled sand and worn rope down to the surf, barefoot, bare-chested, bare-souled. Something about the salt, sand and dim dawn light is good for his heart and weren't he already a slave to his horses, he'd be a slave to the ocean.
- - - - - - - - -
| V. At nineteen, Caleb left St. Claire with a backpack and a letter of recommendation and headed south for Florida in pursuit of his dream… and his dream didn’t come easily. He’s worked as a dog walker, a waiter, pool boy, pizza boy, bouncer, gardener and a gas station attendant- among other things- in the hours he wasn't at the stables to make ends meet; at one point, he was sleeping in his car. Eventually he got his break but it wasn’t without a struggle and he wholeheartedly resents anyone who suggests otherwise.
- - - - - - - -
| VI. He's allergic to bees, has been in three car accidents, has a long, thin scar on his thigh from the time he cut it open on the fin of his surfboard, and has had his nose broken once- surprisingly, not from being punched after running his mouth. He hates the taste of chocolate (really) and rarely drinks coffee, because nobody can make it right (including him), and will choose instead to indulge in a milkshake- usually spearmint, and usually with a kind of quietened-down kid-level enthusiasm. He never understood the idea of reading for pleasure and will only pick up a book if he absolutely has to or needs help falling asleep. On the flip side, he has a mathematical mind and is secretly great with numbers, particularly mental math. He’s also not bad at speed chess- if you can actually get him to sit down for five minutes.
- - - - - - - - -
| VII. Though raised in the States, Caleb's mother is Argentinian by birth, and much of his extended family remains in her home country. Despite his heritage, Caleb's Spanish skills are a fraction above basic at best, and he's utterly rhythmless on the dance floor. He does, however, have a deep weakness for the Latin American food he grew up on. Rare is it that he can walk past a food truck without grabbing something to go, and never is it that he can turn down an invitation to eat at his mom's table.
- - - - - - - - -
| VIII. Caleb likes deep tissue massage, but he won’t have them because he’s painfully ticklish and laughs the entire way through. He prefers playing sports to watching them, and preferably the thrill-seeking kind (snowboarding, surfing, kiteboarding...), though he’s been known to watch NBA or NHL games when "his teams" are playing and he’s got nothing better to do. He's helplessly addicted to mangoes and will eat them in lieu of proper meals, is a sore loser at any sort of board or card game, and loves birds, having fallen in love with them after a trip to the National Aviary as a boy. You’ll often find him on the couch at the end of a long day with his current budgerigar on his chest, stroking his feathers and letting the bird "talk" to him while he watches television.
- - - - - - - - -
| IX. Few people know that Caleb’s favourite time of day is dawn, that he goes running every day and that he used to box for fitness (remember the broken nose we talked about?) or that he doesn’t overly like his name, but is too proud to change it. He has several tattoos, including a wolf, a bird, a memorial, and expressions in Spanish, English and Latin. He has a cheeky sense of humour and is generally easygoing, but when he gets mad he gets good and proper mad, for a good and proper reason, and isn’t afraid to show it.
- - - - - - - - -
| X. Caleb was close to his father as a child- what little boy doesn’t look up to his dad?- but things changed as he entered his teenage years. For Caleb was too bright to waste his life making peanuts as an amateur athlete; too smart to be slacking off at school; too promising to be spending all his time with a girl… At the crux of Charlie’s opposition was his own bittersweet past, but children only see one side of their parents when they stand in the way of their dreams. While not quite as explosive as they once were, relations between Caleb and his dad are strained at best, and with neither feeling they’re in the wrong, it seems it might be a while before that changes… if at all.
- - - - - - - - -
| XI. Caleb currently lives in a studio loft apartment in downtown St. Claire, having recently moved from the rough industrial neighbourhood of South Bay, and before that, from Florida. He shares his place with his budgerigar, Arnold. No girlfriend- he’s been single since he decided to leave the south, and his lady hadn’t wanted to leave with him.
- - - - - - - - -
| XII. It’s no secret that Cal hasn’t exactly been the... the “long-term” type. And yes... some of that unsavoury circuit gossip is probably true… but it’s also true that, secretly, he’s very much open to the idea of settling down! If the "right girl" were to come along and all that. Or so he says. He doesn't really believe it, but it's easier to tell his mom that than to tell her she's not likely to get any grandchildren.
