On the first day of the last week in the final month of each quarter- and on no other arbitrary date, or there was hell to pay- Agatha Foskett required her head trainers to submit to her their intended show schedule for the quarter to come. Timetable-calendars, demanding the names of the shows on the days they were to be attended, the horses and staff required to travel, the location, the rating, and the cost they expected her to outlay in order for them to attend, should her good graces permit it.
The only person for whom this task differed was Archie.
This was because, by and large, Agatha didn’t care what Caleb and Yury were doing. So long as they could justify their expenses, she trusted them to carry on sensibly with affairs she neither particularly knew nor cared about.
Archie was different. The show jumpers were very much her business, figuratively and literally, and, unlike the other two, she didn’t trust him to carry on sensibly with things she most assuredly did care about (possibly a little too much, he fancied)
Thus, where other schedules received an elegant signature and promises of funding when due, his received angry slashes of ink, asterisks carved into paper, crosses spanning entire weeks, looping and furious notations darting alongside print. The journey was too long; the rating too low; the show grounds too rough; the loss too high. This part of Pennsylvania? I don’t think so. Bridgehampton? Too many jerks. Oklahoma? Are you INSANE?
Every quarter, on the first day of the last week in the final month. A good and thorough dragging.
This time, for the spring quarter, he’d surprised her with an empty schedule.
It would just be easier for everyone.

Delano Farm was only a stone’s throw away from Lowmax. In comparison, Agatha would quickly add. Three hours. Drive. But it certainly wasn’t bloody Nowhere-ville, NJ, where Archie had wanted to send them.
One hundred and fifty secluded and sprawling acres in upstate New York; it had the space and the scenery, but that was where the appeal stopped. The barn was small, the town, smaller, and the room at the B&B she’d booked was the size of a leprechaun’s shoebox-
(livable for she and Dot, but Archie and his six feet five inches worth of claustrophobia were going to have some issues)
- and she’d seen bigger crowds in front of mens’ restrooms. The clincher, however, lie in the inexperience of the hosts. First time organising, she found out later. Later being, when her class was so behind schedule she rode her round in the soft, cool glow of a spring sun as it set, and Poquelin’s legs tangled in the long and reaching shadows.
They knew they’d bungled it. She’d barely left the ring and two officials had appeared at Poquelin’s side, overflowing with apologies and assurances and what lovely photos you’ll have in this lighting!
Agatha had told them to get out of the way before she dismounted on them.
She'd also told Archie to shut up before his smug little mouth could utter a single word on the subject of Delano Farm as her choice of venue.

Dolunay was one of those horses that had everything - a natural grace that allowed her to simply float around fields and arenas, a sweet nature that made her friends everywhere she ventured and a strong pedigree of champion show-jumpers. But sadly for Demet, the young homebred mare had one thing lacking - an actual skill for jumping. Maybe it was the long spindly legs she didn't really know how to control or that sliver of laziness that kept Demet frustrated and kicking with her heels even just to walk forward - but Dolunay's future as a competitor didn't look promising and there was nothing Demet could do about it. They left the arena to a half-hearted applause from the few gathered spectators but it wasn't deserved, not in Demet's own mind; they'd crawled around the course and she was sure she'd heard six poles clunk down onto the ground. She gave Dolunay a rewarding hug as they ambled across the arena to the gate; anything to hide the headed red flush on her cheeks as they walked away from their disgraceful round.
