Between the hustle and bustle of the show season, every stable has its own quiet moments—from the sparkle of sunlight between horses’ silhouettes, to a calm moment spent contemplating at the fountain, or a nuzzle exchanged between a mare and her foal. These are the moments that make your stable special and unique. Capture the heart of your stable and tell a story that only you can tell!
Objective: Photograph a quiet moment (nothing in an arena, please!) at your stable. Be creative! You may submit up to three entries per stable.
Entry Requirements: At least one photo that follows the objective and a short description or story about it. (If you are submitting multiple photos, only one can be judged. Please indicate which one you would like to be judged.) All photos in your entry will be judged on a scale from 1-10.
Prizes: Participants will all receive the Nightmare Posepack, perfect for moments that aren't so quiet. The top three entries from each class, which will be selected based on voting (see below), will also get two conformation poses!
Classes: Unedited: blurring/sharpening, color correction, clipping fixes, tack editing permitted; overall lighting/coloring fixes accepted
Edited: any editing/painting that alters the original picture beyond what is considered Unedited
Judging: The entries will be judged and placed based on a community vote, which will open after the deadline. You don’t have to participate in the workshop to vote.
Deadline: August 31, 2018

Stable: Elk & Sparrow Character(s) featured: Sunsation HX - Gina Montgomery Class: Unedited
Feeding time isn't exactly a "quiet moment" at Elk & Sparrow, you can hear the horses from the furthest paddock calling out at any sudden movement coming from a human in the distance, feeding time is a relaxing but challenging moment for our staff members, as seen here, Sunny has decided that he couldn't wait for his hay to be put on the ground and separated, mind you there is two other horses in this paddock, but Sunny believes this whole entire bale is purely...for him. "Can you at least wait until I drop it? It's heavy enough without you tugging away at it, shove off" Gina was always having the task of feeding the young stallions, it wasn't always a fun job, we had to stop using the wheelbarrow to cart the hay in as they would push it over or shove each other into it, and we don't really want any wheelbarrow related injuries. Sunny was set on having his share and well, everyone's share, right now, almost pulling the entire bale of hay off of Gina's shoulders.

Stable: Hunting Dawn Stables Character(s) featured: Ava Rowland, RL Rebel Pride Class: Unedited
After a morning of checking the fences around the property while riding bareback, Ava decided to take a small break. She found a rock to sit down on and read. As she was reading, she could hear the soft huffing of Rebel as he munched on some nearby grass. After a few minutes, she felt a soft muzzle nuzzle her hand. Ava smiled and wrapped her arm around Rebel's head, giving him cuddles.

It begins with waking up in an empty bed. "Waking" might be a bit generous, as that implies there was actual sleep involved, as opposed to a night of dull-eyed staring at the face of an alarm clock that's never set. Dimitri gets up, anyway. The bed is left unmade. It didn't matter anymore. The sooner he gets out of the room, the better, and he retreats down the hall, flicking the light on in the bathroom. The motions of personal hygiene are automatic and habitual, allowing him a blessed while where he doesn't need to think about the day. Face: washed. Hair: combed. Teeth: brushed. As he draws his gaze up from the sink, he's confronted with the man on the other side of the mirror, and finds that he's no longer shocked by the sight of hollow cheeks and faded eyes. It's just how it is, now. He shrugs on a washed-out hoodie, a bid to disguise the weight he's lost, and enters the hall again, this time aiming for the kitchen. It's not even light out, the sun isn't up, but there's a sticky note on the small breakfast table anyway, accompanied by a Ziploc bag of apple slices, the flesh already browned. He unstickies the note, reading it while he pours a cup of coffee from the long-stale pot he'd left in the coffee maker the night before. Don't forget to eat breakfast!! At least take this with you!! xoxoxo love you dad! - Aiko At the very least, he knows better than to let the apples go to waste, and so he does take them, along with his coffee, as he leaves the house. Fingers of light begin to reach with tentative air from over the peaks of the mountains, awakening the first of the birds, the first pipes of their morning songs joining the crunch of Dimitri's boots on the gravel drive as he walks. The lack of a second set of footsteps beside his own echoes hollow in his chest. There are no playful back-and-forth quips, no laughter, no plans for the day. Just himself, and the birds, and eventually, the horses. They greet him in their usual way: heads poked over stalls, muted murmurs of what he assumes are equine endearments, the occasional scrape of an impatient pawing. Hungry, hungry, hungry, their eyes all say, as eager for their breakfasts as they always are. Dimitri won't be the man to deny them, and, like his routine of face-washing, hair-combing, and teeth-brushing, he sets about dropping feed with mindless familiarity. The work takes twice as long as it should, because there's only his set of hands to do it, but he does it. Each bucket is awarded an apple slice, to boot; Aiko's treat, though he knows it wasn't meant for them. It is only once the sound of anxious whickers has died away into the muffled chuff, chuff, chuff of grain being chewed that he allows himself to rest again. He half-sits, half-collapses onto the nearest bale of hay, recollecting his abandoned coffee cup, just to hold it. There's no point in drinking it, anymore, he's always exhausted, whether he does or not, but it's a habit to make it, and a habit to hold it. Beside him, the great gray mare in the stall at his back leaves her feed, still chewing, as she stretches her neck over the stall door to inspect him. Wren's eyes are old, ancient even, fathomless in their kindness, and she offers what comfort she can, in the form of a gentle whuff of grain-scented breath into his hair. Much as Dimitri appreciates it, he can do little but let his head come to rest against the stall panel, with a hollow wooden sound. Soft brown eyes watch him, but even Wren seems to know that, try as she might, matters of heartbreak and loss are human things, things she'll never be able to understand. She stays with him, anyway; it's the least she can do. Dimitri remains still, clutching his coffee that he won't drink, staring up at the cobweb-riddled rafters he keeps saying he'll dust out but knows he probably never will. Wren's presence beside him is steady, but ultimately, insufficient. It could not fill the human-shaped void that had followed him since he'd gotten back the news. I'm so sorry. He's gone. The wedding band on his finger had weighed heavier from that moment on. Everything weighed heavier. Years later, and he still grieved, the emptiness still settled into the pit of his stomach and left him cold, the world around him, gray. "Happy anniversary," he croaks to the stable's empty aisle, knowing full well there's nobody to listen. That, too, is a habit.

Show season is always a hectic time of year at Trillium. Katrina had a chance to sneak away and catch a quiet moment with Nikki (TLM Nougat). She was quick to take the sugar from Katrina's hand and nudged Katrina for more.

Stable: Honeybrook Character(s) featured: Blanca Valentini, Rupert Rosella, Honeybrook Wyvern 'N Widgeon (Milo), Honeybrook Siren's Curse (Junior), Night Rain PL (Rain) and The Horse (I have no idea)? Class: Unedited Summer had been unrelenting; the cloud of sweltering heat floated across the dry land causing a lazy haze that lifted gradually throughout the long days. For newcomer Blanca, it hadn't been an easy transition to settle into her new life at Honeybrook. Although the Rosella family had welcomed her merrily into their small group, she hadn't yet found appreciation for the birds that started their merry morning tune at ungodly hours of the bright mornings - why was her bedroom right across from the woodland? She had hoped for rain and darkness, the two things she had always conjured in her mind when she thought of England. But her faithful old sweaters and winter coats still remained unpacked whilst she sweated off the festive food weight she'd gained every December. Rupert tried to keep her settled and balanced in his busy, thriving life but it didn't come easy to him. He was usually tucked away in the main barn, worrying over one of his prized Warmbloods or trying to convince his two headstrong sisters why they shouldn't keep taking on stray pets. He hadn't been amused at all to peel back the bed covers to find find a furry four-legged beast with a lopsided wolfish grin and a lovely set of pearly teeth growling at him. But every so often, he would hang back from the morning exercise sessions; taking the time to overcook toast and sprawl out on their large overstuffed couch, the phone in his hand bleeping with regular updates from Benny. But for Blanca, this was their own happy little bubble; away from the prying eyes of the grooms, wondering exactly what did Rupert see in her, to the over-friendly nature of Benny and his bear hugs that left her full of hay and an unusual shyness.
Blanca's first official exploring tour of the farm had resulted in her finding an overgrown meadow that one blossomed under care and love from someone; now it was neglected and shrouded behind the thick moss trees that lined the property. Her plucky nature had resulted in her being allowed to work with Milo, a bulky big bay thing with a shocking white blaze that curved up at one side of his muzzle, and an oddball patch of white on his back leg. He was what Rupert called 'a good duck'; he was never what some would call naughty or misbehaved, but he was sprinkled with mischief, and each morning he would walk calmly out of his large cosy stable, letting Blanca lead him out into the sweltering heat under Rupert's watchful eyes as he joined alongside with his gelding Junior - but as they would soon part company, one heading for a serious workout in the arena, the other wandering down to the long-lost meadow - Milo's child-like personality would unfold.
Peace and quiet - they weren't ever words that popped into Blanca's mind when she thought back over her day. Loudness, cheerfulness...yes, but never quiet. Even the main barn was often swamped with activity; horses heading in and out on rides or turnout trips, grooms complaining over the heat whilst dumping feed buckets outside each stable - the regular visits from the jolly old vet who's red-tartan pants definitely did not flatter his bulging stomach. For Blanca, peace and quiet came in the late misty-pink evenings when she enjoyed the overload of calories in the extravagant hot chocolate, even in the heat wave, loaded with cream and marshmallows - and the calmness of the outdoors as she slipped the soft white treats to the young bay stallion she'd come to class as her own.
Night Rain was still referred to as the baby of the yard, even though he was now an adventurous two year old who spent his time pottering around his field with the bay horse that never appreciated Blanca's evening trips. But every evening she would enjoy the peaceful silence settling across the farm; the odd snort and whicker from the barn where the competitors were stabled overnight, the twigs snapping as birds hopped from the surrounding trees; the comforting sense of companionship she shared with Rain as they enjoyed the hot chocolate cradled in her hands. This was her quiet moment.
Please judge the last picture. And thanks for hosting this fun challenge!

The rare few seconds of trust. Better not move or say a word, or she'll shy away again.
It doesn't look like we are doing anything, but the moments like this mean everything with my new, still very cautious mare.

My Quiet Moment ♥ Stable: Stall Kalkenburg Character(s) featured: Sonnenkönig K, Ann Rose Kalkenburg Class: unediet From time to time you just need those quiet, relaxed moments. Pause a short moment and breathe deeply, especially in the stressful tournament phase this is especially important.
Since it was very hot during the last few weeks during the day, the horses arrive in the meadow late in the evening and are allowed to spend the whole night there. You can see how they enjoy it, just in such a moment this picture is finished, which my father had shot unnoticed by us.

It's not every day you marry the love of your life. The kind of person that understands the role of your horses in your life. The one that says "let's include your horse in the ceremony". However, despite this day being the fairy tale moment you've been waiting for, you still get nervous. You still get butterflies. So you take a moment with your best friend, the creature that has always been there for you, and you have a quiet moment.
